About the Hosted Portal Solution
Our Application Service Provider (ASP)/Software as a Service (SaaS) solution provides the use of the Passageways software and hosting with a one-time setup fee and an affordable monthly fee. At first the ASP/SaaS option was appropriate for those on a limited startup budget, for those wanting to "test the waters" of their business model before committing to a material investment, or for those whose needs were short term. Tech Corner: Clearing Out Old Portal Log Files can Speed Things up and Save You Space

Several log files are created on the portal server each day. It is important to maintain these files to ensure your portal server is operating efficiently. Deleting older log files or files that you no longer need can improve the performance of the portal server and save you hundreds of megabytes in space.

To delete the log files, you must have access and permission to the portal server. Navigate to the log file directory, which is usually [drive]:\Inetpub\wwwroot\Passageways\logfiles, and delete files that are older than one month in age. (One month is merely a suggested age, since many times an issue can be trended by looking at the log files to see if a particular error is new or has been occurring for some time.) Keep in mind; some files do not have the creation date in the file name. You can locate the age of the log files by modifying the supply list, selecting Details tab, and sorting by date.

In the event that your log files are larger than 1 MB, there is a possibility that your system is generating errors that are causing the log files to be so large. Please contact the Passageways Support Center so that we may look at the log file and determine if there is an issue that can be repaired.

Note: There are some files that should not be deleted based on date: DeletedWorkgroupsLog.config, UserDeletionsLog.config, UserProfileChangesLog.config and ModulePropertyChangeHistory.config as they are not created daily. If in doubt, don’t delete it.

Remove Old Backup Files:
Each time Live Update is run on your portal server backup files are created. Usually these files are located in the [drive]:\Program Files\Passageways\Update directory. These files should periodically be deleted. This step alone can save you gigabytes of space.

Manage the Images and Attachments:
Attachments, images, and photos in Photo Album islands require large amounts of space. It is a good idea to periodically clean up these files as well. Managing these items will save space and help keep your portal up-to-date. The files are located on your portal sever. The paths can located by going to the Tools area on the navigation tree > Manage Modules > Module Properties, and then select the appropriate module such as Group Collaboration. The paths are listed as “Attachments Path”. Remember, this path is located on the portal server.
