Active Directory to the Rescue

Enterprise Instant Messenger (EIM) 3.3.0.0 will be released in early December and the client application that resides on each user’s workstation will require an update. To speed the installation process we want to share an overview of how your organization can deploy the new EIM client (or any other Windows program) to hundreds of computers on your network.

The networks for many of our customer’s run a script when users log in to perform software updates, network drive mapping, and other maintenance operations. This script can be modified to copy an installed EIM client folder onto each computer on the network. Adding a few lines of code to the login script allows registry keys to be installed and a shortcut can be added to the desktop. This gets the EIM client deployed and ready to use. The down side to this approach is that there is no entry in the Add/Remove Programs listing in the Control Panel which means uninstalling EIM would need to be done manually.

The missing link is a program called msiexec. This standard Windows program is a command line utility that runs a MSI installation file and it just so happens that our EIM client installer is a glorified MSI file. For advanced users, the power of msiexec and Active Directory (AD) can be combined to allow you to "Publish" the installer to any workstation using a transformed MSI file. This process works even for users that do not have admin rights to their machine and can be set up to run behind the scenes with no user intervention.

Additional details on transforming your MSI file and steps to implement the EIM client deployment on your network will be included with the release. Additionally, a Knowledge Base article will be posted on the support site (support.passasgeways.com) after the release.

As always feel free to contact Passageways Support at support@passageways.com or 765-497-8815 if you require assistance locating and managing these files.
